A SAP Provider is a Substance Abuse Professional. A SAP provides drugs and alcohol assessments for individuals who are employed in the transportation industry and are subject to federal drug and alcohol use and testing regulations, under the federal Department of Transportation (DOT). An individual who violates these regulations must be immediately removed from safety-sensitive functions, and may not be returned to any safety-sensitive functions in the transportation industry until and unless he/she successfully completes a DOT return-to-duty process which includes an assessment from a SAP provider.
- As a SAP provider I am able to provide a face-to-face clinical evaluation and then recommend treatment and/or education.
- I send a report to the employer, specifying the recommendation for treatment and/or education.
- I monitor the progress in the recommended program of treatment and/or education.
- I will schedule a Follow-Up evaluation and based on that evaluation, I can report to the employer that the employee has successfully complied with the SAP’s recommendation (or that the employee has not complied.)
